This is a broad question, so we will condense everything in one post, which means for deeper explanations about making money, please ask a more specific question!

1. Let money make more money

• buy wisdom and use it to your benefit!
• buy a product and resell it
• buy a few products, recombine them and sell it (buy water, sugar and fruit and sell it as marmalade)
• put your money in a savings account
• put your money in funds
• put your money in the stock market but make sure you know what you are doing, otherwise go for funds
• pay others to do the work for you and sell their product or service

2. Work hard for the money

• get a dayjob
• start blogging and make money online
• combine the above: get a dayjob and start blogging during office hours to make money online

3. Try your luck

• buy a lottery ticket
• look for a dollar bill in your socks (yes, most likely you will be as lucky here as when buying a lottery ticket )

4. Do things that are not allowed

Unfortunately there are a lot of ways to make money illegally. They look attractive but you risk your freedom. Buying a lottery ticket you only risk your money.

Once you have made your money, you need to spend it wisely. The main killer for your personal wealth are credit cards charging you a ridiculous high amount of interest.

Make sure you earn money for yourself and not for the bank!

How to make money online

In short you can go through the list of 4 money makers above and use it to make money online.

We are making money doing most of the work ourselves and sometimes we ask other people to do the work for us: they write a post for us and most likely they will add their link in their post. If you feel your website can use some extra advertisement and buzz, just write a post and leave a comment over at How to start a blog.

It took him about a day to be online like before, where using my affordable web hosting I am online again cleaned from all malicious software in less than an hour.

But Alvin’s question is: Wordpress 2.5.1 Should You Upgrade?

To answer this question: look at the picture below and give your honest first impression:

Even without knowing what the whole idea is all about, you spot that "stuff for sale here" is quite odd compared with all the seemingly sophisticated other concepts.

A similar approach is needed when you make money online. You need to ask youself:

are your components and efforts in sinc or
is there a noticeable weakest link that should be upgraded/improved upon?

If you hardly have any visitors, then chance is small hackers will be interested in your site, so which version of Wordpress you are using shouldn’t be your biggest concern. Even if you get hacked and your site goes down, you won’t notice it when your earnings are little anyway.

But when you have a well visited site like Alvin’s, you should consider to change your webhost from the cheapest of the cheapest Hostgator to any affordable web hosting. Why?

• because a decent webhost won’t shut your site down once your traffic spikes (Hostgator will because they oversell what they have: bandwidth needs to be paid!!!)
• a decent webhost cannot afford that their client is down for the whole day, so they will work with you to make sure you and they are happy and your site will be online ASAP.

So if you are serious about making money online, check out if your tools are in sinc:

• your webhost : mine is always in sinc because that’s the deal me and my web host agreed upon: If I get more visitors using more bandwidth means I opt for a bigger package quick and easy.
• your computer
• your Internet connection
• your knowledge (if you don’t know how to monetize a blog, then don’t spend money on anything else but knowledge first!)
• your efforts
• your software tools (and only now we consider Alvin’s question: WP2.3 or 2.5.1?)

Make sure yourself, your tools and your partners are in sinc when you are serious in making money online! Things that are below standards of the rest, need to be upgraded first!

3. you decide how long you will go (when do you want to earn how much money?)
4. you look for the best ways to get there (blog, website, write an ebook…)
5. you find out what things you can do there (mingle with the newbies and become their teacher, mingle with the others, produce useful info, point to better sites…)
6. you book some tours and taxis to not waste time once you arrive:
1. do you do all on your own and spend lots of time or
2. do you spend some money and save lots of time

But I already have a website, now what…

If you are like me and already have a website that makes money, keep with it but make some extra time for :

• evaluating,
• focusing and
• planning.

Evaluate if you are really happy with what you are doing? If not, then where are you not happy? This will be the start for improvement.

Focus: You wonder why a blog like Linky Love talking about Money, Pets, Sexy Gossip, SEO and Blogs of the Weekend is not making as much money as it should? It’s all in the FOCUS, and in our case: the lack of it. In stead of rambling about all this in 1 blog, I better break it up in 5 blogs. "Deconstruct and reconstruct"…

Planning: Step of the sink and swim idea and start planning where you want to swim to. Once you know where you want to go, you can break it up in little steps.

How easy is that?

Very easy to say but rest assured: this can take a whole month to get yourself ready.

And that’s exactly what Linky Love will be doing these next few weeks: making a new plan and start the rest of our journey well organised.

Monetizing a blog or website is much more than:

• "throw a few ads on your blog"
• "get more visitors"
• sit by, sip a cigar, drink a cognac

.. and you are making money online…

How to make money with a shop

The above logic applied on a shop would mean:

• buy a few products
• put them in your shop
• get more visitors

… and you are making money in your shop…

When "more visitors" doesn’t make "more money"

Most likely you have been to a train station: in the morning it’s full with people. What are people buying there?

Whatever they can grab in the few minutes their train is not there:

• newspaper
• coffee
• magazine
• fast food snack
• …

Although there are lots and lots of visitors, nobody puts a shoe shop in a train-station. Why? Because it can nicely take me a few hours before I find the shoes I want…

So having lots of traffic doesn’t automatically mean you have lots of sales and make lots of money.

Know your blog visitors

You can only know your visitors well if you see them face to face in real life as real people.

Second best is getting to know visitors because you manage to keep them commenting on your blog. (DaddyP is a great example for that strategy, the opposite can be said about Galapagos Islands: nobody is commenting there.)

Otherwise you need to use logfiles to see where your online traffic comes from and categorize them as such.

Do they come from:

• search engines
• bookmarks

The first visitors are dropping by for 1 aspect of your blog (which specific aspect can be found in a good logfile or use sitemeter dot com).

Once they found what they want, they will most likely click on something and off they go.

Which visitors make money and which visitors don’t?

Like in the train station, you can sell fast and lightweight products before people step on the train.

So how to monetize your website visitors?

Search engine visitors drop by most likely for the first time. Call them "men shopping for a shirt": they go right to the target, buy and out of the shop they are again!

Same on your blog: soon as they see what they want (or worst case they don’t see it), out they go again. These people are the people that have no clue what are ads and what aren’t on your blog, so their click through rate could be quite high.

Regular visitors or those who bookmarked your site "know your ads by heart". So the only way for ads to be effective with them is to change your ads frequently (every day a new deal…). Change your layout from time to time and again you will see the clickthrough going up if you have mostly regular visitors.

Content is king, visitors are queens

Therefore you now know that content is king is only half of the story…

Conclusion

Today I only wanted to highlight that there is more than just the simple idea: the more visitors I have, the more money I earn.

Also the idea: content is king, optimize your content, optimize your keywords… all fine but: it’s only half of the story.

From next Monday onwards we will reveal some more secrets and strategies in order to monetize "which blog" for "which visitors". Visitors are queens… treat them accordingly and you will get what you want

It’s earnings that counts

After 9 months of Linky Love, we still don’t rank number 1 for Make Money Online, for the same reason John Chow isn’t ranking number one either: just because Google doesn’t like what we are doing.

Anyway, after 9 months of trying and having been on the first SERP when John Chow was ranking number 1, I quit the game that nobody knew about. If you know Sally Chow, you know that there are much more important things in life than beating people with similar names…

Nevertheless I love John Chow (not like his wife loves him of course…) as I equally love the evil John Chow .

His blog most likely makes about 100 times more money than mine and his Review Me price is 7.5 times more than mine.

Does adding your link make you money?

Does adding a secretary make you money? Well, if she just sits there being sexy, hell no she won’t bring you any extra money!

But if your secretary is efficient and works hard,
sure having her around will pay off big time!

Same with adding your link to our Add URL toplist. It can sit there being sexy without helping you much. But if you let it work for you, then it will pay off!

How can you let your link pay off?

How much money Linky Love makes on the Internet

The average over our first 9 months is about 300$ a day. That’s cute if you make less but that’s quite little if you need to support yourself, let alone your family.

So is Linky Love THE place to be to learn about making money online? Well: if you want to be a full time blogger, you need more advice than Linky Love is giving you by example.

French Swear Words is a money making machine

Where I am making my money on the Internet these days is at French Swear Words. If you have a look at my $713 month 6 earnings you see that:

I spent $47 and bought the Super Affiliate Handbook from Rosalind Gardner. In her book she teaches you how to pick the best affiliate programs!

I applied the Super Affiliate Handbook techniques and earned the first month about $300 dollars selling French courses. Invest less than $50 and make 300$…

The next month my income doubled, where Linky Love’s earnings without affiliate income were stagnating…

So the problem I have now is: yes I know how to make money online, but I cannot show it with Linky Love as an example.

You could say: why don’t I sell more affiliate stuff here? Because you can read in the Super Affiliate Handbook that once you find a winner, stick to it, don’t waste time looking for another winner if yo are happy with what you earn. And I am very happy

How to improve contextual advertisement earnings?

1. make sure that a user clicks on an advertising link, not any link
   TODO: get rid of all these links on the frontpage that are not earning any money
2. make sure that your contextual ads are having a nice payout
   TODO: heoretically use Google Adwords and see which ads pay well, then attract those ads on your website.
   Practically: don’t ramble around like I do about Charlène Vanneste if you write a blog about how to make money online. A French subject like Charlène Vanneste should go on my French blog...
   If you ramble about anything and everything, you could end up with a high visitors count, yet a very low payment of the advertising you are showing.
   Stick to 1 topic where the ads are well paid and you have lot’s of things to say about.
3. attract more visitors
   TODO: source new visitors with new SEO ideas, marketing ideas, communities… don’t just do what you are doing now
   (quite vague, best thing is to go and read other blogs and get new, fresh ideas! : step out of your comfortzone!)

How to improve writing reviews for money?

You need to improve your blog according to the guidelines given by any of the paid to blog services.

• Personally I am very disappointed with PayPerPost having a RealRank 1 didn’t give me any big opportunity.
• Blogsvertise and Smorty still rely on PageRank, which for a blog with a high amount of visitors like mine, I love ReviewMe and SponsoredReviews.

Yet, last month there was no money coming in from any of these blogging for money services, so :

How to improve What we forgot?

Again: go to other sites and see what they are doing when it comes to making money online.

1. Sponsorship

By now you must be familiar with the 125×125 image sponsorships like the one on the right : where to find the best smoothies: click on the smoothie image!

• what kind of website do they advertise on

2. Text Link Ads

We do have Google approved Text Link Ads that doesn’t bring anybodies PageRank down. To make more money with it:

Affiliate Marketing works fine on my French Swear Words blog, selling the best online French course out there!

At Linky Love affiliate marketing is not taking off yet, so:

Contextual ads need good context for good ads

Unlike websites for pets, that have advertisement straight about pets, blogging about juicy subjects like a sexy secretary gives you the famous "Hurricane Ads"…

Cat protection should be a better contextual advertisement
than bragging about how the US cannot even take care about its own citizens
and needing Google to help them out in raising money on the Internet.

New visitors are always good

If you suddenly incorporate a new topic in your blog, a topic that is very in demand of course, then you will attract new visitors.

New visitors are not yet blinded by your contextual ads and click through much easier than your regular visitors.

Regular visitors come for your content, not for your advertisement, therefore it’s very difficult to make money on the Internet with showing always the same ads to your visitors.

One way to change contextual ads easily is bragging about new topics, pets for instance…

Then I ask you: what have cats to do with selling Nokia phones? Seemingly a lot if you watch this cat on a ceiling fan…

How to make money on the Internet with blogs that don’t make money online

Now that would be quite out of topic, unless you make it a topic

Typical example here is our famous DaddyP, blogging on the Wordpress site, so not allowed to make money online.

Yet DaddyP is FUN and you always get a crowd when you are FUN! And a crowd means: sooner or later they will have a look at your site and voila, again new visitors you can make money on the Internet with.

DaddyP fits in right anywhere: from his last wheelchair post it’s easy to post a cats on Tuesdays equivalent like so:

Just that this DaddyP blog is becoming so popular that almost after a merry 100 comments on his wheelchair post, the subject suddenly changes to juicy Orange Whips…

Why not using a contextual ad filter

Why Linky Love doesn’t use the Adsense filter to tell Adsense not to make contextual ads about sexy secretaries? Why not using catnip against sexy secretaries?

Catnip: to use or not to use in contextual advertising?

Don’t use the "catnip" Adsense filter! Why?

Because that would be all against the idea of a "good visitors experience".

If you came here for sexy secretaries, then you should get what you came for. Using catnip tactics with blocking the sexy secretary out of the contextual ads would be like taking the present out the box and then presenting it…

I know lots of bloggers do use the Adsense filter (like those days John Chow was still in love with Adsense), so as with everything on the Internet: it’s a personal choice, depending on what you want for your visitors.

• make a general category that could cover lots of topics and imagination centered around 1 subject
• use this category to interact with other bloggers and new visitors that at first sight don’t fit in your blog
• it’s all about Internet Marketing: get yourself noticed! , It’s not really about SEO…
